Jesus Sends Them Into the Storm - Matthew 14:22-33

Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.

Jesus meets us in the storm, calls us to courageous faith, and lifts us when our strength fails.

It’s striking that the disciples are not in the storm because they wandered off course—they are there because Jesus sent them. Obedience does not exempt us from difficulty. Sometimes following Christ leads us straight into waters that feel overwhelming.

Yet even when Jesus seems distant, He is never absent. He comes at the right time, in the right way, with the right word.

Walking on the Water — Faith That Steps Out

Peter’s boldness is beautiful. He sees Jesus and wants to be where Jesus is—even if it means stepping onto impossible waves. His faith is not perfect, but it is willing.

There are moments in ministry, in family life, in personal calling, when Jesus invites us to step out of the boat—out of safety, out of predictability, out of what we can control. Faith is not merely believing; it is moving toward Jesus even when the path looks impossible.

Where is Jesus calling you to step out in trust? What “boat” feels safer than obedience?

“Lord, Save Me!” — Grace for Sinking Saints

Peter begins to sink when he shifts his focus from Jesus to the wind. But notice what happens next: He cries out, “Lord, save me!”   And immediately Jesus reaches out His hand.

Not after a lecture. Not after a test. Immediately.

This is the heart of the gospel: Jesus saves sinking people. He lifts us when our courage falters. He steadies us when fear overwhelms. He does not abandon us to the waves.

The Wind Ceases — Worship in the Boat

When Jesus and Peter climb back into the boat, the wind stops. The disciples respond not with relief alone, but with worship: “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Storms often become the places where we see Jesus most clearly. Not because He causes them to frighten us, but because He reveals Himself within them—stronger than the waves, nearer than the fear, faithful beyond our weakness.

A Prayer

Lord Jesus, You meet us in the storms we never expected. You call us to step out in faith, and You lift us when fear pulls us under. Fix our eyes on You. Strengthen our trust. Teach us to worship You in every season— for truly You are the Son of God. Amen.
